Stay or Sell? How To Make the Right Call as You Get Older

At some point, this question tends to come up—sometimes quietly:

“Can I stay here long-term… or would it make more sense to move?”

It’s usually not urgent. It shows up in everyday moments—walking up the stairs, keeping up with yardwork, or just thinking about what the next chapter of life might look like in your home.

And for most people, the first instinct is simple: stay.

That’s especially true here in the Twin Cities and across Minnesota, where people tend to put down roots and stay connected to their homes, neighborhoods, and community for decades.

But even if staying feels like the right answer, it’s still worth thinking ahead a bit.

If Staying Is the Goal, It Helps To Have a Plan

Aging in place is absolutely possible—and a lot of homeowners are choosing to do just that. But the home that worked perfectly 10 or 20 years ago may need a few adjustments over time.

Sometimes those are simple updates:

  • Grab bars in bathrooms
  • Better lighting
  • Fewer tripping hazards

Other times, they’re bigger decisions:

  • Main-level living adjustments
  • Bathroom remodels for accessibility
  • Reworking layouts to avoid stairs

Here in Minnesota, we also have to factor in things like snow removal, exterior maintenance, and seasonal upkeep, which can become more challenging over time.

The key is not that you need to decide anything today—it’s that planning early gives you options:

  • Time to think through what changes make sense
  • Time to space out costs
  • Time to line up trusted contractors
  • Time to decide what’s truly worth it

And if costs are a concern, there may be programs, financing options, or even ways to use your home equity to help cover updates.

One thing we always recommend—before making any big improvements, it’s worth having a quick conversation. Not every upgrade adds value the same way, and we can help guide you based on what we’re seeing right now in the Twin Cities market.

When Moving Might Make More Sense

Even if the goal has always been to stay, there are times when moving becomes the better option.

We see that happen when:

  • Home maintenance or yardwork starts to feel like too much
  • Stairs or layout make day-to-day living harder
  • You want to be closer to family, healthcare, or support
  • Or you’re simply ready for a simpler lifestyle

And honestly, sometimes it’s not about necessity at all.

It’s about choosing ease.

We work with a lot of homeowners in this stage who just don’t want to take on a big remodel or continue managing a larger home. Downsizing, moving to one-level living, or even exploring 55+ communities can make everyday life feel a lot lighter.

There’s No “Right” Answer—Only What’s Right for You

Some people stay and make thoughtful updates.
Others decide it’s time to simplify and move.

Both are great options.

The goal isn’t to make a decision today—it’s to understand your options early so you’re not forced into a rushed decision later.
